STIMULATION OF VISUAL PERCEPTION AS AN APPROACH TO PREVENTION OF WRITING AND READING DISORDERS
Moscow City Pedagogical University, Russia Research Institute of Spatial Pedagogic, Moscow, Russia

Empirical research has shown that in Russia, over 30% of primary school students with writing and reading disorders have difficulties perceiving visual information. Visual representation plays an important role in learning and everyday behavior of a person.

We have developed a technique named Visual Trainer, which helps improve visual perception in children four to six years of age. The technique facilities gradual acquisition by the child of a number of sensory standards and a set of perceptive activities, which apply these standards to recognize objects.

Several structural components of the technique can be isolated:

The method is of a didactic nature; it contains a variety of training materials (black-and-white and color, picture-based and sign-based, etc.). The number and sequence of exercises can be varied by the speech pathologist depending on the level of psychophysiological preparedness of the child to the development of reading and writing skills.
