The target of the space medicine is a normal healthy individual and, basically,
its objective is the maintenance of the optimal functional state of the body
and the preservation of its functional reserves. As a result, the most important
task of space medicine has been the elaboration of those resources and methods
that support a cosmonaut’s psychic and professional efficiency in
all stages of a lengthy space flight. One of the possible ways to fulfil
this task is the use of pharmaceutical preparations increasing the adaptive
capability of the body. In 1993-1994 we conducted experimental researches on
the evaluation of the impact of a phytogenous adaptogen with complex composition
upon the quality of an operator’s performance and psychic efficiency
of the investigators-volunteers through simulation and under the regime of lengthy
continual monotonous workload, promoting the development of fatigue, in case
of course intake. The researches were carried out on the basis of the use of
an automatized psychodiagnostic complex. Computer-based techniques were applied
as an experimental model. The main goal of the researches was to study the impact
of phytogenous adaptogens upon human efficiency and a functional state
of the body, also substantiation and elaboration of the recommendations with
regard to application of those preparations under experimental conditions. The
obtained experimental data were exposed to statistical analysis with the help
of standard packet STATGRAPHICS, involving a multiple-factor dispersing analysis.
The produced good experimental results of the effectiveness of phytogenous adaptogens
have allowed to recommend the given adaptogen with complex composition (rosewort,
magnolia-vine, eleuterococis) in space medicine (today its trade name is “Rodelim”).
With the aim of increasing the effectiveness of a board system of medical care,
an additional medical “adaptogen kit” was completed and placed on
a transport aircraft. The 15 members of the crew of a major expedition on an
orbital complex “Peace” conducted an intake of the adaptogen under
the control of the doctor of the crew and got a positive evaluation of its effect.
More and more convincing studies show that free radicals, produced in unfavourable
conditions (and this often takes place in cosmos) and in case of increased workload,
exert damaging action on many structures and, accordingly, on the organs of
human body. More than 60 diseases are related to damaging actions of free radicals.
In this case, the most perspective is the application of natural resources having
apparent antioxidant qualities. Moreover, it is advisable to obtain a wide range
of natural resources for their use in cosmic terms. The following resources
are anticatarrhal, strengthening the vascular system, maintaining immunity and
functioning of gastrointestinal tract, also osseous system, etc. As a result,
the following phytogenous preparations were placed on the orbital international
space station aimed at preventing the possible disturbance of functional state
of cosmonauts:
- “Trioson”- bioactive additive with sedative effect, promoting
sleep normalization;
- “Gasterol”- bioactive additive aimed at maintaining the functioning
of gastrointestibal tract;
- “Herbasprin”- bioactive additive consisting of a bark extract
of a white willow and a number of plants with anti-inflammatory and
immunostimulant qualities.
Consequently, the increasing application of natural sources is typical for the
most progressive areas of medicine. Fairly this is the result of certain revision
of values taking place in medical science – and, particularly, the result
of the modern view that the use of synthetic materials are justified only
in case of immediate necessity. In many cases, (including hard and unusually
extreme conditions for a human being) just natural preparations are able to
provide absolutely safe and, in the long run, trully valuable help.
